Why the old cabinet opening decides the job
Measure the hole before you buy the appliance. In a thirty-year-old kitchen the hole is never quite what the spec sheet assumes.

Most of the kitchens we work in around 32082 are not original. They are second or third generation, renovated inside a footprint that was set decades ago. The cabinets changed. The opening usually did not, or not by much.
That matters more than it sounds, because a built-in cooking appliance is specified as an appliance plus a hole. Get the hole wrong and the appliance is running outside its design conditions from the day it is installed, and nobody finds out until something fails early.
The four measurements that decide everything
Width at the narrowest point. Openings are rarely square. Measure top, middle and bottom, both sides, and use the smallest number. An opening that is right at the top and a quarter-inch tight at the bottom will still take the appliance — by force, with the side trim doing the work the cabinet should be doing.
Depth from the finished wall. The gas connection, the electrical whip and any conduit have to live in the gap behind the unit and still let it sit flush. When the gap is short, the connector gets a hard bend to make it fit. A hard bend is a stress point that lives behind an appliance nobody moves for fifteen years.
Height from the finished floor to the underside of the counter. Floors get built up. A tile layer over the original substrate, a new subfloor, a levelling compound — each takes height out of the opening, and a slide-in that should sit on its supports ends up bearing on its trim instead.
Clearance to combustible material at the sides and above. This is the one that is a safety requirement rather than a fitting preference, and it is the one that a renovation most often quietly erodes by adding a decorative panel or a deeper upper cabinet.
What goes wrong when the opening is tight
A unit squeezed into a narrow cutout does not sit on its supports evenly. On a cooktop that is how glass cracks — not from impact, from a bearing point that should not be there.
Restricted rear depth kinks the gas connector or the electrical whip. It also blocks the ventilation path that cooling fans in cooktops, rangetops and wall ovens rely on. An induction hob backing off power under load is very often a cabinet problem being reported as an electronics problem.
Restricted height traps heat under the counter. Control boards mounted directly beneath a cooking surface age by degree-hours, and every degree of extra ambient shortens the arithmetic.
Hoods have their own version of this
A hood is specified at a mounting height above the cooking surface. Too high and it stops capturing the plume; too low and it is a clearance violation over an open flame. In a renovated kitchen, upper cabinets often changed depth, and a hood that fits the cabinet no longer fits the range.
Ducting is the second half. The original run was routed once, on the shortest available path, for whatever blower was on the wall at the time. Length and elbows both cost airflow, and a blower asked to make that up runs hotter and louder for its whole life.
Before you buy
Measure the hole first, then choose the appliance. Not the other way round.
If you are replacing like for like, still measure — floors and backsplashes get added over the years, and the opening you had is not always the opening you have.
If the numbers are close, they are not close enough. There is no version of this where a tight fit becomes acceptable once the appliance is in.
