Built-in outdoor grill
Outdoor grill repair
Built-in outdoor gas grills on the St. Johns County coast, where the failures are corrosion driven rather than wear driven, and arrive faster than inland.
Symptoms
- The igniter clicks but the burner will not catch
- One burner lights and the others will not carry across
- Flame is uneven along the burner tube, or dies at one end
- A knob is stiff, gritty, or will not turn to low
- The grill will not hold temperature with the lid down
- Rust bleeding from a seam, a fastener or a hinge
- The rotisserie motor hums but does not turn
Detail
An outdoor grill built into an island on this coast is the most exposed appliance anyone owns. It sits outside all year, it is used hard for a few months, and it lives in air carrying salt off the Atlantic. Understanding that changes what you look for when it stops working.
Corrosion is the mechanism, not wear
Indoor appliances fail because parts wear out. Outdoor grills here fail because metal changes. That distinction matters for diagnosis, because corrosion faults show up in places wear never touches: the crimped joint in a wire harness, the threads on a valve stem, the inside of a burner tube where nobody looks, the spring clip holding an igniter electrode at the right gap.
Two grills of the same age, one four blocks from the dune line and one four miles back along the Intracoastal, are not the same grill after five seasons.
Ignition
The single most common call is an igniter that clicks without lighting. Outdoors the causes stack up faster than indoors:
- The electrode gap has changed because the bracket corroded and moved.
- The ceramic insulator is cracked, so the spark tracks to the nearest metal rather than jumping the gap where the gas is.
- The burner port nearest the electrode is blocked, so there is a spark and no fuel at the same place at the same time.
- Moisture in the module or its housing after a storm.
None of those is a valve. Replacing a valve because a grill will not light is the most expensive way to not fix a grill.
Burners and flame pattern
Look along the burner with the grates off and the flame low. A tube that flames strongly at the manifold end and weakly at the far end has ports blocked, spider web in the venturi, or has corroded through internally. That last one is common here and is a replacement, not a cleaning.
Carryover — one burner lighting the next — depends on a small crossover channel that is exactly the kind of narrow passage salt and debris close up. When a grill lights burner by burner but will not carry across, that channel is the first place to look.
Valves and knobs
A knob that has gone gritty is a valve stem with corrosion product in the grease. Forcing it is how stems shear. There is a proper service for this and it is worth doing at the first sign of stiffness rather than the second.
Covers, and the argument about them
A cover keeps rain off and traps humidity underneath. On this coast, covering a grill that is still warm, or covering it during a stretch of high humidity without letting it breathe, does more harm than leaving it uncovered. Use a vented cover, put it on cold, and take it off on dry days.
Outdoor kitchens generally
A lanai does not stop salt air. Air moves through a covered outdoor kitchen more or less as freely as it moves across an open patio, and the equipment corrodes on roughly the same schedule. What a roof does help with is direct rain into control cutouts, which is worth having.
What a visit looks like
We come to the island rather than asking you to remove anything. Flat diagnostic fee, credited toward the repair, written estimate before parts are ordered, and genuine OEM parts — which matters more outdoors than in, because the corrosion resistance of a part is part of what you are buying.

The rotisserie burner would not stay lit in any wind at all. He fitted a new flame sensor, adjusted the shield behind it and stayed while it ran for a while to be sure it would hold in the breeze.
Ignacio W.
The grill in our summer kitchen had corroded through its burner tubes. He replaced them, cleaned the salt off the valve bank and told us plainly which parts will go the same way in a few more seasons.
Perpetua L.
The side burner would not simmer without going out. He found the valve worn and the orifice partly blocked, replaced one and cleared the other, then checked the whole manifold for leaks before leaving.
